Health & Animal Care

Healthy animals train better, compete better, and live longer careers. Every horse and dog in Topline has a health score that changes daily based on care, workload, and luck. This guide explains how it all works.

How Health Works

Every horse has two core stats: Health (0–100) and Stress (0–100). Health reflects physical condition and directly affects training and show performance. Stress reflects mental and physical fatigue — left unchecked, it leads to burnout.

Both are updated every tick. Neglected preventive care causes health to decay gradually. Heavy training and competition builds stress. Good management keeps both in check.

Health (0–100)

Affects training efficiency and show performance. Falls below 50 and your horse can't compete. Falls below 25 and training stops entirely.

Stress (0–100)

Builds from training and competition. Above 60 blocks show entry. Above 75 triggers burnout — a 30-game-day condition requiring rest to resolve.

Notifications

You'll be notified when a service becomes overdue, when an injury occurs, and when your horse recovers. Check your notifications daily.

Health & Performance

Your horse's health score applies a multiplier to their show score. A healthy horse competes at full potential. A neglected one does not.

Preventive Care

Preventive care keeps your horse healthy and avoids penalties. Each service is due on a recurring schedule. You can perform care yourself from your horse's profile, or book through a player-owned business. Business bookings are processed on the next daily tick.

Horse Care Schedule
Service Due every Grace period Overdue penalty Health cap if severely overdue
Farrier 80 game days 10 game days −0.75 health/tick 80
Deworming 90 game days 30 game days −0.5 health/tick 85
Dental 180 game days 30 game days −0.5 health/tick 85
Vaccination 365 game days 30 game days −0.5 health/tick 85
Wellness Exam 730 game days 30 game days −0.5 health/tick 85

Farrier is your most urgent task. It has the shortest grace period and the strictest health cap. A horse left unshod for too long will cap out at 80 health regardless of anything else you do until the care is performed.

Stress & Burnout

Stress accumulates through training and competition and decays naturally over time. A resting horse recovers twice as fast. If stress reaches 75, the horse burns out and enters a stressed condition that lasts 30 game days.

Natural Decay

Stress drops by 2 points per tick during normal activity.

Resting Decay

Mark your horse as resting and stress drops by 4 points per tick — twice the normal rate.

Burnout Recovery

The stressed condition clears automatically once stress drops below 20 and 30 game days have passed. Therapy services shorten this significantly.

Injuries

Injuries occur randomly during the daily tick. Risk is higher when a horse has low health, overdue preventive care, or is very young or very old. There are three severity levels.

Injury Severity
Severity Untreated recovery Self-resolves?
Minor 14 game days Yes — resolves with rest
Moderate 60 game days No — vet treatment required
Severe 180 game days No — vet treatment required

Possible injuries include tendon strains, ligament sprains, hoof abscesses, back spasms, muscle tears, bone bruises, joint inflammation, stress fractures, tendon ruptures, and severe fractures. An overdue farrier makes hoof abscesses more likely.

Injury Risk Multipliers
Health below 402.5× injury risk
Overdue preventive care1.5× injury risk
Overdue farrier (additional)1.3× injury risk
Horse under 4 years old1.3× injury risk
Horse over 16 years old1.4× injury risk

Veterinary Treatments

When your horse is injured or burned out, you can book treatment directly from their profile page or through a player-owned vet clinic. Treatments restore health immediately and reduce the recovery period.

Injury Treatments

Treatment Available for Health restored Recovery reduced
Basic Exam Minor, Moderate +5 10 game days
Specialist Visit Moderate, Severe +10 25 game days
Surgery Severe only +15 40 game days
Rest & Therapy Minor, Moderate, Burnout 8 game days + −20 stress

Burnout Treatments

Treatment Stress reduced Recovery reduced
Rest & Therapy −20 8 game days
Behavioral Consultation −35 15 game days

Business Services

Player-owned vet clinics and farrier businesses offer services that often provide stronger outcomes than self-service care. Bookings are processed on the next daily tick — book the evening before if your horse needs care before a show.

Dog Health

Dogs have a single Health score (0–100) managed through four preventive care services. Unlike horses, dogs do not have a stress system or injury mechanic — keeping up with their care schedule is the primary management task.

Tips

Farrier first

It's your most frequent horse task and has the tightest grace period. Missing it caps your horse at 80 health and increases hoof injury risk.

Rest before big shows

Stress decays twice as fast when your horse is resting. A rest day before a competition is always worth it if stress is climbing.

Treat moderate injuries immediately

Moderate and severe injuries don't heal on their own. The sooner you treat them, the sooner your horse is back in work.

Book businesses overnight

Business bookings are processed on the next daily tick. If you need care before a morning show, book the night before.

Don't forget grooming

Dog grooming is due every 60 game days — more frequently than vaccination or wellness. It's easy to let slip.

Burnout clears itself — eventually

A burned-out horse recovers after 30 game days once stress drops below 20. A Behavioral Consultation cuts that significantly if you're in a hurry.
